Smart Color Grading

Grading is usually discussed as a look and practised as a repair. Both are real, and they happen in that order: match the shots to each other first, then decide together what the sequence should feel like.

Correction before creativity

If two shots of the same conversation do not match, no amount of stylisation will hide it — it will make it worse. Balance exposure and white point across the sequence before touching a single creative control.

Skin is the reference

Audiences forgive almost any colour decision except one that makes a person look unwell. Skin tone is the anchor every other choice is judged against, which is why it is the last thing to be pushed and the first thing to be protected.

“A grade is not a filter you apply at the end. It is the last chance to make the film feel like one film.”

Build a look you can repeat

A look that exists only as a stack of adjustments on one timeline cannot be applied to next quarter's videos. Export it, name it, and note the conditions it was built for so the next shoot can match rather than guess.

Check it somewhere honest

  • A phone screen at half brightness
  • A laptop in a bright room
  • The platform itself, after compression
  • A calibrated monitor, last rather than first
